JAIGAON


Jaigaon is in a small valley located near the low lying hills of the Himalayan Mountains. It lies on the bank of the Toorsa River. It is a census town and a Police station under Alipurduar , which is coterminous with the newly-created Alipurduar District. The main overland entrance to Bhutan is through Jaigaon.Therefore; Bhutan Gate separates the two countries. Bhutan being a hilly country does not have internal domestic roads linking to all its towns, so Bhutan uses Indian roads passing through Jaigaon to reach such destinations such as Samtse, Gomtu , Samdrup Jongkhar etc and Bagdogra Airport (Siliguri) is the nearest airport for Bhutan and Jaigaon and also Kolkata  being its nearest port ,  Hasimara Railways is the nearest .

The outskirts of the city are demarcated by tea gardens. The Toorsa River flows on the western part upto the lower end of the town.  The lifestyle of Jaigaon is influenced by the town's diverse population comprised of residents from throughout India and Bhutan. The demand of Bhutanese consumers from nearby Phuentsholing has led to the development of the service sector in various fields.

A variety of festivals of various religions are celebrated in Jaigaon, reflecting the town's diverse demographics.

The diversity of Jaigaon can be seen in its food and clothing, which represents diverse segments of Indian culture. In addition toh this the town's proximity to Bhutan has led to the popularity of Tibetan-influenced cuisine such as momos. In addition, ghos and kiras, the Bhutanese national dress is produced in Jaigaon for Bhutanese consumers.

There are some Govt. schools upto class-4 level and upto class-8 level.

Students in large numbers prefer Private schools for their higher secondary education due to unavailability of any other Govt. Higher Secondary School.

Some  private schools upto higher secondary level is also functional in that area and they are:- St. Anthony ,Chenari Academy , Glory Middle Secondary School at (GP-I) SHMD School, BD School, Sun Rise English Medium School ,  St. Johns School are located in GP-II.

There is only one college in Jaigaon on the name of Nani Bhattacharya Smarak Mahavidyalaya which is affiliated to North Bengal University. The college thus provide a  big campus .

In the Jaigaon Development Authority (JDA) area there is a 10-bedded PHC, which presently is functioning with an Out Patient Department (OPD) and as a Delivery point. 

There is also many private community hall in the name of Samaj Kalyan Sangh , Gorkha Bhawan Jaigaon GP-2 , Gorkha Bhawan Jaigaon G.P. I, Agrasen Bhawan at GP-II, Tulsi Bhawan at GP-II(near star cinema), Gulabi Devi Bhawan , Sahu Bhawan and Terapati Bhawan , Hanuman Mandir Dharmasala(in GP-II) These community halls cater to individuals in renting at different occasions to the inhabitants in that area.

One tourist favourite place to be visited in Jaigaon is  named as Jaigaon View Point from where the beauty of Jaigaon and adjoining border area along with water runways can also be witnessed.

And since the town is developing and getting prosper soon there will be one stadium constructed in this area too.
